The Mirrored Cabin 30 Minutes Outside Bozeman You’ll Want to Escape To
After a few nonstop weeks, I escaped just 30 minutes outside of Bozeman for a staycation at Golden Ranch. Rainy mornings, movies in pajamas, sauna sessions, caviar in the hot tub, and plenty of quiet made it the reset I didn’t know I needed.
There is something slightly ironic about living in a place people travel across the world to visit and still feeling like you need to get away. After a few incredibly busy weeks of work, that was exactly where I was. I didn’t want an airport, a packed itinerary, or really even to leave Bozeman. I just wanted to get out of my own space for a couple of days, sleep somewhere beautiful, eat good food, and slow down a little. Golden Ranch turned out to be exactly that.
About 30 minutes outside of Bozeman, the property feels considerably farther away than it actually is. The drive takes you along back roads, past open land and into an area that still feels like the country (which becomes more and more rare). It’s close enough that you can easily pop back into town, but far enough away that pulling up to the property feels like you’ve actually gone somewhere. And then there’s the cabin itself. Golden Ranch is home to only the second mirrored cabin of its kind in Montana, and it is absolutely beautiful. The reflective exterior almost disappears into the landscape, while inside, the huge windows make the surroundings part of the space. It’s modern and minimal, but somehow doesn’t feel stark. Instead, you feel tucked into the landscape, watching the weather and light change around you.
We arrived on a rainy, chilly Saturday afternoon, which honestly couldn’t have been more perfect. Within about 20 minutes, tea was brewing, food was out, a movie was playing in the background, and our laptops were open. After the pace of the previous few weeks, there was genuinely nowhere else I wanted to be. Of course, the beauty of a staycation is that real life can still happen when it needs to. That evening, we bounced back into Bozeman for a grand opening on Main Street, grabbed sushi to go afterward, and headed straight back out to the ranch. We showered, put on pajamas, poured sparkling water for my girls, opened the sushi, and turned on It’s Complicated. A Nancy Meyers movie in a beautiful house with nowhere else to be? Exactly my kind of Friday night.
I slept like a dream. I sleep in linen bedding at home, so the linen sheets immediately made the cabin feel comfortable and familiar, but the bed and pillows themselves were insane. I woke the next morning to the sunrise beginning to come through the windows with rain still falling outside. We made coffee, put on jazz, and opened our laptops while watching the weather move across the property. I’ve realized this is one of the things I appreciate most about a great place to stay. You shouldn’t have to constantly be doing something to enjoy being there. Sometimes hospitality is simply creating a space where you’re perfectly content to stay put. Golden Ranch did that beautifully.
That Sunday morning, I had Mandy with Yarrow Road, a massage therapist recommended by the property, come out to the cabin. I have to say, it was genuinely one of the best massages I’ve ever had. Having a massage while the rain came down outside, then realizing I had absolutely nowhere I needed to rush off to afterward, was maybe the perfect rainy Montana morning. Mandy also works from a space in Bozeman and can come directly to your home or rental. If you book with her, you can use my referral code LIV. Afterward, we made a simple breakfast of Coco June vanilla yogurt and berries and sat outside on the patio. Eventually, we did have to head back into Bozeman to run a few errands. Apparently even the most idyllic staycation cannot completely eliminate a to-do list, but that became part of what I loved about staying here. We were able to get away, without having to fully get away.
By the time we made it back to Golden Ranch, the clouds had moved through and Montana had given us one of those absolutely perfect summer afternoons. It was around 70 degrees, breezy and sunny, with that incredibly clean light that seems to come after a storm. I got in a workout at the property’s beautiful new gym, showered off, and headed into the sauna. I brought my journal with me, took my time, and could physically feel myself starting to settle after what had been a very full few weeks. That evening ended up being my favorite part of the stay. A few girlfriends came out for dinner, one arriving with pizzas from Pizza Campania, and we essentially turned the cabin into our own little summer dinner party. We drank Recess, opened some caviar, added crème fraîche and potato chips, and eventually climbed into the hot tub as the sun started to set. It was one of those Montana summer evenings that feels almost too perfect. Not too hot, maybe 70 degrees with a breeze, making the hot tub feel incredible. We sat there eating caviar and watching the light change across the property, and I remember thinking that I couldn’t have planned a better Saturday if I had tried. Pizza, girlfriends, caviar, a Montana sunset. Sometimes the simplest plans end up being the best ones.
By that evening, I felt noticeably different than I had when we arrived barely 24 hours earlier. We showered, got back into our pajamas, put another movie on, and watched the last of the sunset through the cabin windows. Later, we wandered outside to stargaze before eventually climbing into bed for another incredibly peaceful night. And I think that’s what I loved most about this weekend and The Ranch itself. Nothing monumental happened over the weekend. We didn’t have an itinerary or spend our days checking Montana experiences off a list. We ate sushi in pajamas, drank coffee while it rained, got some work done, had an incredible massage, ate breakfast on the patio, worked out, sat in the sauna, journaled, had girlfriends over, watched the sunset from a hot tub, and went outside to look at the stars.
Somehow, though, it felt like we had really gone somewhere. That is the beauty of a staycation, especially when you live somewhere like Bozeman. Sometimes you don’t need to escape your life. You just need to change the setting long enough to enjoy it differently. Golden Ranch gave me exactly that. I could see this being such a special place for a couple visiting Montana who wants privacy without being hours away from Bozeman, a solo retreat when you need some quiet, or a weekend away with your best friend. It gives you the feeling of being tucked away in the Montana countryside without requiring you to completely remove yourself from town.
Monday morning, it was back down those country roads and into Bozeman for another full week of work. Only this time, I felt ready for it. And sometimes, that’s exactly what getting away is supposed to do. xx
